Undergraduate Programmes

We are responsible for teaching the principles of Clinical Pharmacology to undergraduate medical students. We have the following structured undergraduate Clinical Pharmacology teaching blocks during MB, ChB I and MB, ChB V:

We conduct bedside and other clinical pharmacology teaching activities when MB, ChB III, IV, V and VI students rotate through Internal Medicine.

This module includes the following topics:

  • Introductory aspects if pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • Pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system
  • Drugs for the control of pain and inflammation
  • Chemotherapeutic drugs acting against bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites
  • Pharmacology of the endocrine system
  • Evidence-based medicine
  • Principles of physiotherapy in the treatment of pain
  • Principles of surgery


MB, ChB V Clinical Pharmacology 511

This module includes the following topics:??

  • Pharmacokinetics
  • Pharmacodynamics
  • Drug-drug interactions
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Prescribing in special populations: renal impairment, hepatic impairment, elderly, pregnancy, lactation, critically ill and children
  • Drug safety and adverse drug reactions
  • Prescription writing and scheduling of medicines
  • Therapeutics of allergic rhinitis, asthma and COPD
  • Therapeutics of infectious diseases: principles of antibiotic prescribing, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria
  • Management of common poisonings
  • Evidence-based health care
  • Therapeutics of gout, arthritis and pain
  • Therapeutics of endocrine diseases: diabetes, osteoporosis, thyroid disease and endocrine emergencies
  • Therapeutics of cardiovascular diseases: acute coronary syndromes, cardiac failure, lipid disorders and anticoagulation
  • Psychopharmacology: management of depression, psychosis and epilepsy
